Shrinking and expanding disks with Vmware ESX

Shrinking and expanding disks (VMDKs) with vmkfstools is as simple as entering a command at the COS. On ESX3 however, the -X switch doesn't seem to allow shrinking operations anymore. As alternatives to vmkfs tools, check these or these suggestions.
